A buck a beer, or simply a buck a vote?

Tim Hudak is coming out of the gate looking like a complete moron. Of all the pressing and urgent issues of the day, the best thing this neanderthal could come up with to pander to the electorate is the concept of lowering taxes to allow beer to be once again be sold at a "buck a beer".

How about rolling back the horrendous HST instead of the lousy tax on beer, Mr. Hudak?

I hesitate calling this guy a moron, but that's what this mover is deserving of. Tim Hudak has even surpassed low water mark of Ontario politicians seeking favour from the electorate when idiot Jim Flaherty ran on a platform of "jailing the homeless", back in 2002.

Tory leader calls for lower beer prices

Ontario’s Conservative leader raised a trial balloon Monday about lowering the tax on beer to allow “buck-a-bottle” suds in the province again.

“One of the things that (Premier) Dalton McGuinty has done is he has banned the $24 ‘two-four.’ We’ll have more to say in the time ahead about some of the ideas that we’re hearing from families,” Tim Hudak said.

“But I do hear from people who say, ‘C’mon, I can’t even get a buck-a-beer in the province anymore thanks to Dalton McGuinty’s policies?’ There are many folks, myself included, who looked forward to the $24 ‘two-four’ on the May 24 weekend.”

Finance Minister Dwight Duncan raised the minimum price for a case of 24 bottles of beer to $25.60 from $24 in November 2008 after successful lobbying from the breweries.

The government cited the “social responsibility” of discouraging underage drinking as a reason for the mandatory increase.

The attack from provincial Liberals on Hudak are predictable and not surprising.

The message is that taxes all across the board are too high. McGuinty had campaigned 6 years ago on not raising taxes a "single penny". The rest is history.

Higher taxes from McGuinty has led to higher poverty, unemployment deficits. He has turned Ontario into a not-have province.

The response to try and ridicule Hudak for wanting to decrease taxes is risky. Some taxes have scared investors into creating new jobs in Ontario.

Exorbitant beer prices is not one of them but it is nonetheless is symbolic of over taxation for the middle class.

This is the choice. Tax cuts or tax increases. From your perspective the tax cutters are morons.

We have to remember who to thank for the HST , our old Con buddy Jimmy the pirate O`Flaherty who never saw a tax increase he didn`t love.

I am still thanking him for the 31.5% tax on trust distributions.

I am still thanking him for not putting a stop to double taxation of dividend income within retirement accounts despite being handed a plan to do just that.

This guy loves to give corporations a break at the expense of the little guy at Tim`s.

PS---a special thanks to Michael Ignatieff fro supporting the Con led HST.

A second special hat`s off to Tim Hudak for his refusal to remove the HST if elected.

Hey Anonymous:

Tell Tommy boy that I am not interested in his absurd "symbolism". How about "substance" instead, such as reversing Dalton boy's rapacious HST.

If you are so keen on "symbolism", what do you think about the "symbolism" inherent in Hudak bashing the HST but not willing to reverse it?

I can't think of better symbolism to indicate that Hudak is all talk an no action. All symbolism and no substance.

Brent;

It is clear that you are on the side of tax increases; Fair enough.

We are finally having a conversation about high unsustainable taxes. It was the symbolism of the beer tax that has us talking about the issue. We need to have it.

Pox on this Con-versation! Youse guys are arguing about a diddly in the squat.

If your polis-wags really, really wanted to improve the economics of most citizens, they'd subsidize equipment for MIY or GIY (hint 'IY' means 'it yourself).

The sooner nitwit Canadians get themselves isolated and insulated from the gawd awful 18th-century form of government called 'Canadian democracy' the better this great land will be, eh?

Anonymous: How did you reach that false conclusion, by reducing the whole issue of taxes down to one mindless irrelevant and "symbolic" tax on beer, all designed to avoid addressing the bigger issue of over taxation?

Brent; Then tell me what taxes should be reduced.

It is clear though that Mcguinty has never said he'd reduce taxes and he did say he wouldn't increase them. He lied.

Answer:

Try reading the second line of the post:

"How about rolling back the horrendous HST instead of the lousy tax on beer, Mr. Hudak?"

What the heck. Why don't they go one step further and cut taxes on wine too? After all we Italians need to have wine with our pasta....:) BB

Brent;

Agreed.HST increases to fuel are hurting big time.However..

There is a case to be made for the employer health tax to be cut back because that is effecting new job growth. What about cuts to the new hydro tax? This too hurts manufacturing as well as households. Don't forget about the new taxes in the GTA (allowed by the province) but that is being addressed.

The point is that the tax increases are rampant and they must be reversed. It is a difficult task to know precisely what should go first. Finally there is at least a discussion.

What about the effects of 'overage' drinking! Partly the result of the Federal CONS having negatively affected peoples retirement years, by having substantially reduced the monthly income of many seniors with their IT tax betrayal...Is that not "social responsibility"
