The recent press release from the Harper government heralding new trucks for Canada's army trumpeted the fact that not only would the army benefit from the purchase, but the economy would also be strengthened by the $274-million deal with truck manufacturer Navistar.
There is only one problem -- the 1,300 vehicles would be built at the firm's plant in Texas and not at the Navistar plant in Chatham, Ont., where some 500 workers have received layoff notices while another 200 workers are expected to be laid off by the spring.
"It's completely unacceptable that these trucks are not being built in Canada, and I would think most Canadians would agree with our position," said Canadian Auto Workers official Bob Chernecki.
